Mothering Our World

Reminders for us to honor our mothers abound this week. Grocery stores are full of tempting bouquets and plants, card sections are full of loving messages and brunch events are flashing up on our news feeds.

Celebrating motherhood is valuable. Now that I am a mother myself, I understand the sacrifices my mother made as she raised me as a single mom. I also know, having encountered a period of my life when my mother was not in it, that Mother’s Day can be painful. Some of us have lost mothers, some of us had mothers who were unable to nurture as we needed, some of us wished to be a mother, and life had other plans.

This weekend, I believe it’s important to define the holiday, using the broader definition of mother from Merriam-Webster.

  1. something that is an extreme or ultimate example of its kind especially in terms of scale

To be a mother is to be kind and I think we can all agree that this world needs a lot more kindness. Whether someone calls us “mom” or not – celebrate the ways in which you mother this weekend. Perhaps it’s a relationship you have with a friend who counts on you for emotional support. Or celebrate your furry friends that look for you to provide the perfect place to snuggle up on the couch. Honor the women in your life that make you feel whole.

Beyond that, let’s examine how we can collectively “mother” our communities. We already see examples of this – as women step forward to say #Enough, as teachers plan to walk in Raleigh in protest of pay and student safety, as women stepping up to run for office.

We are excited to be a small part of that at Women AdvaNCe, and we do have a way in which you can honor yourself or the women in your life.

Today is the last day for you to donate $25 or more in order to receive a bumper sticker in time for Mother’s Day.

Your donation supports our continued work of providing a platform for women to share their experiences, and mechanism to empower us all with knowledge to AdvaNCe the change.
